BEST of BRIGHTON

It’s been a rare pleasure spending more time in Brighton recently and I thought I would share the gastronomic delights available to enjoy whilst walking on the beach, or delivered to a doorway. My personal dessert-island-dish would have to include freshly grilled lobster dripping in garlic butter, crispy triple-cooked roast chips with homemade mayo and a chilled Sancerre on the side. So perhaps it will come as no surprise that my recommendations include the most fabulous fresh seafood feasts, available to enjoy right now, from Brighton’s best!

Firstly, newcomers to the South Laines scene, are TIDE by the Lost in the Lanes team. With super chef James in the open kitchen, they’re cooking up fresh Cajun inspired seafood – available via Uber Eats or click and collect - every Friday and Saturday night. We dined on Crispy Squid marinated in buttermilk and fried in a crispy gluten free Southern style batter, which was exactly how you imagine KFC should taste. We demolished pink king prawns in chilli, lime and rum caramel and almost fought over who got the last of the Gurnard fillets and Popcorn Moules. Meanwhile the Rosemary Salted Roasted New Potatoes with slow cooked crispy onions were a divinely decadent take on chips. You can also max out on Southern Fried King Oyster Mushrooms, Miso & Garlic Butter Corn on the Cob, Asian Style Cucumber & Sesame Salad as well as a kimchee-esque Red Cabbage, Fennel and Ginger Raw Slaw and Mushroom burgers… order @tidebrighton.

If you’re planning on visiting Brighton beach sometime soon, there’s a host of independents serving up the freshest catches still too. Check out hole-in-the-wall ‘Sea Haze’ and Jack who sells everything his Dad’s day boat catches, from live lobsters to cod cheeks.

Next door is Jack & Linda Mills’ Smokehouse, proffering freshly cooked crab, hot kipper, fish finger or ‘catch of the day’ sarnies.

The fabulous Riddle & Finns beach restaurant up the road is excitingly offering Jersey Oysters @ £2 each, Clam Chowder, Lobster Croque Monsieurs and Tiger Prawn Pa’Boys.

Carry on towards Hove to The Regency Restaurant which is doing a roaring trade in take away hot lobsters, roast whole catch of the day and fish & chips…the kid’s portion is great value at £4.

Further up Hove beach, Marroccos is selling freshly fried Fritto Misto, Italian coffees and the most amazing ice creams with queue time at hopefully only five minutes.
